Running

Even though I’ve been feeling unhealthy lately (hoping for a diagnosis soon!), I recently decided to keep active instead of sitting at home letting my tummy take over my life.  High up on my list of things to do next year is to run a 5k.  I’ve already registered to run one for real on May 24th, so I decided to start training early – because I don’t really run.  In elementary and high school, I was able to run short distances, sprints, and relays, but I never really understood long distance running. Anything longer than 500 metres was not my bag.

I like challenges though… so 5k it is!

How am I going to do it? First off, Mark is planning on running the race as well.  I have someone to hold me accountable for being able to do this.  Secondly, I activated my work gym membership at the Westin… and it’s a really nice gym, with really nice equipment, so that’s awesome.  Thirdly, the gym is on my way home from work… so convenient! Fourth of all, I purchased a new pair of sneaks.  They’re super light, comfortable, and cute to boot.  New workout gear has also been acquired.  Fifthly (are these even words anymore?), I’m using the Get Running app on my iDevice to train myself into running.  It eases you into running for longer and taking fewer walking rests.  The lady talking me through running has a lovely calming British voice.  She doesn’t seem to be judging me yet. Sixadoo, my busted knee still hurts a touch, but not as much as I thought it would.  It doesn’t seem to be aggravated by running.  I’m guessing that it’s because of all the forward/up/down motion as compared to the lateral movements needed for derby – but I’m keeping my eye on my knee just in case it falls off. Seven – I actually kind of like running so far!  The gym provides me with a lovely view of the canal and it’s nice to have some alone time and a chance to clear my brain of the day’s events. Octopus: Being healthy is super important, so running is part of how I’m keeping myself healthy right now.

Fancy sneaks.
Fancy sneaks.

So it seems as though I am becoming a runner.  I’m gonna be so speedy. Right?

Please let me know if you have any runny tips! I’m happy to take all the help that I can get!

  1. Try Running Room sometime Jenn, they offer workshops and get you out running on the streets. They even sponsor marathons here on the East Coast, including Pert!
